I held a few jobs previously that required me to dress in “business” attire. I was 21 when I first nabbed a job with this dress code, and to be completely honest, I had no friggin’ clue what “business attire” was.

For dudes, this is fairly straightforward (and easy). They throw on a suit & tie, and they alternate colors of each. For the babes, & me specifically, this was a lot more complicated. I hated skirts because in order to maintain my “ladylike”-ness, I couldn’t move around as easily & felt like I was constantly checking to make sure my underwear wasn’t showing, & I had to stand up & sit down a certain way.. I certainly couldn’t pull a Britney & by accidentally flash the goods. I hated heels because to this day, I still can’t walk around in them very well. And by very well, I mean I can’t walk in them at all (which is funny because I used to be a model). Dresses caused the same level of anxiety as skirts did. Finally, dress pants just did not fit me. They look like pajama pants on me, and I hadn’t been acquainted with what the word “tailoring” meant.

Now at 31, the only issue I have with workwear is being able to find stuff in my size & rotating pieces to create new ensembles. Pinterest has served me well when it comes to outfit inspiration, and I wish I had known about it back when I was trying to figure all this adult-like shit out. I put together a few outfit ideas for all ya’ll looking for some variety.

Remember: there’s a such thing as “tasteful” cleavage, so don’t let the girls out of their cages at work. Check your employee handbook for skirt/dress length specifications. But, don’t be afraid to take risks with everything else.

Boring doesn’t have to be a part of the dress code. 💋

A basic black dress can go under really any blazer, or by itself, with a statement necklace.
Black on black plus blazer = fashionable & appropriate. Maybe not as low on the top, but my boobs looked good so I left it alone for the sake of the blog post.
This camel blazer. 😍
Statement button down tank with pearl embellishment, & tweed pants. (I can only manage these heels because they have memory foam in them)
